GENERAL

Flagler County is the fastest growing county in the US. In the 1970s, when ITT established the community of Palm Coast the vision was of a place to retire.

Today the City of Palm Coast is far from being a retirement community thanks to friends and family of the retirees who came to visit but fell in love with this beautiful place and relocated.

The county proved to be an excellent place to retire but also a great place for business and family.

The pace of the growth prompted the beginning of the restoration of the cities of Bunnell and Flagler Beach to their old glory.

Flagler County has 23 parks and more than 60 miles of bike paths.

There are many ongoing projects which show the fast development and a good glimpse to the future of the county. Among others is the new Town Center for Palm Coast which will be a place where people live, work and play. In the Town Center you will find: government offices, shopping, restaurants and entertainment.

The airport is going to be expended to facilitate the businesses and private people how use Flagler airport as their port of entry to the county.

Roads are being widened and an overpass is being added to contain the traffic of this fast growing community.

HISTORY

There are many archaeological signs that show that the native Indians, who during their seasonal migration came to the area to collect the various resources of the shoreline.

The Spanish used the area as a military outpost and English constructed a road from Jacksonville, through Flagler to New Smyrna. This road is still being used today and is named Old Kings Road after the original English name "the Kings Road".

The old settlers lived from plantations that produced sugarcane, indigo, rice, cotton and citrus.

The county was established in 1917 and was named for Henry Morrison Flagler who was a railroad magnate and developer of Florida´s East Coast.
