Ormond Beach is a lovely seaside community often called the "sparkling city by the sea." Known for its´ exceptional quality of life, Ormond Beach is conveniently located in the northeastern corner of the east-central region of Florida. It is 50 miles south of historic St. Augustine, 60 miles east of Orlando and 60 miles from the Kennedy Space Center. Ormond Beach is a place where families can live and recreate all year round. The town of Ormond Beach got its reputation as the "Birthplace of Speed," when early enthusiasts raced their cars on the wide sands here. The "Birthplace of Speed Antique Car Show and Swap Meet" is held in Ormond Beach every Thanksgiving, attracting thousands from across the country. The scenic Tomoka State Park, located just three miles north of Ormond Beach is perfect for fishing, boating, hiking and camping. There are walking and biking paths in the park, wooded campsites and guided canoe tours along the Tomoka and Halifax Rivers.

HISTORY

 

The history of Ormond Beach goes back to the English settlers and the Timucua Indians.

In the 1700s and 1800s most of the area around the Halifax and Tomoka Rivers consisted of sugar mill plantations until the Seminole War put an end to the plantations. In 1854 when Volusia County was created there where 20 families in the entire county. The city was incorporated by a group of families from New Britain, Connecticut how started a retirement colony which was initially called New Britain Connecticut until 1880 when the name was changed to Ormond.

In 1888 the city became a tourist attraction with the opening of the Hotel Ormond which was bought in 1890 by Henry Flagler.

In 1902, Ransome E. Olds and Henry Winton staged an unofficial race the beach in Ormond and that´s how Ormond Beach became the birthplace of speed.

One of Ormond Beach most famous residents was John D. Rockefeller who lived in his house in Ormond until he died in 1937 at the age of 97.

The city where now more than 35,000 residents live is continuing to recognize and preserve its heritage.

There are 17,258 housing units at an average density of 258.8/km² (670.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.28% White, 2.75% African American, 0.17% Native American, 1.44% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.31% from other races, and 1.03% from two or more races. 2.20% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
